Editorial Reviews:

Birdie Cousins has thrown herself into the details of her daughter Chess's lavish wedding, from the floating dance floor in her Connecticut back yard to the color of the cocktail napkins. Like any mother of a bride-to-be, she is weathering the storms of excitement and chaos, tears and joy. But Birdie, a woman who prides herself on preparing for every possibility, could never have predicted the late-night phone call from Chess, abruptly announcing that she's cancelled her engagement.

It's only the first hint of what will be a summer of upheavals and revelations. Before the dust has even begun to settle, far worse news arrives, sending Chess into a tailspin of despair. Reluctantly taking a break from the first new romance she's embarked on since the recent end of her 30-year marriage, Birdie circles the wagons and enlists the help of her younger daughter Tate and her own sister India. Soon all four are headed for beautiful, rustic Tuckernuck Island, off the coast of Nantucket, where their family has summered for generations. No phones, no television, no grocery store - a place without distractions where they can escape their troubles.

But throw sisters, daughters, ex-lovers, and long-kept secrets onto a remote island, and what might sound like a peaceful getaway becomes much more. Before summer has ended, dramatic truths are uncovered, old loves are rekindled, and new loves make themselves known. It's a summertime story only Elin Hilderbrand can tell, filled with the heartache, laughter, and surprises that have made her page-turning, bestselling novels as much a part of summer as a long afternoon on a sunny beach.

Customer Reviews:

I am sooo disappointed!!!! Sep 05, 2010

I have read all of the author's books & love them all.
I preordered this book & was so looking forward to reading
it & am only half way through it. It is dragging. The truth
is that I don't like any of the characters. I will finish it
& hope that somehow I change my mind about these people & can
write a better review.

Three Sets Of Siblings Aug 25, 2010

I really liked this and think it's the perfect book to take to the beach in the summer, especially if that beach is located on Tuckernuck Island, Nantucket or even Cape Cod where I got to spend a week or two during many of my childhood summers. Hilderbrand created interesting characters and she never let it get boring because she kept the relationships suspenseful. Told from different characters points of view, the author did a remarkable of job of keeping the sequencing and the facts straight (who knew what, and when they knew it).

NANTUCKET AREA AGAIN. Aug 24, 2010

Nantucket area again. An privately owned island and 4 women: 2 daughters (Tate and Chess), the mother (Birdie) and the aunt (India). They are all here to connect with each other and with reality. Birdie is divorced from Grant, Tate has no love of her life presently, Chess has cancelled her wedding to Michael and he has fallen to his death on a rock climb, and India's husband Bill committed suicide and she has a chance of a lesbian affair with a student at the art college. Barrett Lee is their caretaker during their month on the island. Many surprises await all of them. A Very Good Read.

Decent plotline but just terrible writing Aug 21, 2010

The author had a good idea and some interesting outlines for characters. But this was one of those books where the author tells you what is going on rather than showing you through character interaction and depth. It reads like the outline of the book instead of the actual story. There are some super embarassing sentences "she was bucking like a horse at the gates". Ewww... Not impressed. That said, I finished it.

Great Read Aug 20, 2010

This was the first book I have read by this author. It was a very good read. I will be getting more of her books (just ordered The Blue Bistro). I hope it is just as good as this one. I really came to love these characters and am a sucker for anything to do with a beach setting.....
